A swimming city
For the very first time in our life we made a cruise trip! The idea for it was quite spontaneous, we didn´t plan it at all when we started our World Trip. Because we were already in Miami and most of the cruise ships to the Caribbean Sea start from here, there are plenty of offerings and we found a last minute one on the internet and booked it directly. We always wanted to try a cruise trip and this time we took the opportunity. We were looking for a cruise which goes to the western part of the Caribbean Sea because we has been already in the Bahamas on the eastern part and for a cruise length of one week. We found the offer of the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) with the ship Getaway and the route is Miami – Honduras – Belize – Mexico – Miami. This ship was built in 2014 by a German company names “Meyer Werft”, so it´s quite new for a ship.
Before we boarded, we went to a supermarket to get some snacks for us. We went on board at around 1 pm and the ship was leaving Miami at around 4 pm. We only booked an inside cabin, but the quality and space was already very good for us. The ship has a passenger capacity of around 4000 people and roughly 1600 for the crews, almost as big as a small city. Here are some technical data of the ship: Total length 325m, height 51m, 18 decks, travel speed 22,5 knots (ca.41km/h), MAN diesel – electric transmission with a total power of 62.4 MW (84 840 HP).
The offer on board was really huge, there were 17 restaurants, 22 bars and lounges, a big theatre, big outdoor screen, swimming pools with some flumes, whirlpools, a basketball or small football field, mini golf, table tennis tables, climbing wall, climbing frames, jogging way, fitness rooms, SPA and wellness area, bowling alley, casino, child care, teenager area where parents has no access, duty free shops, game zone, etc. There was also a huge entertainment program on board, musicals, live bands, magician show, comedy club, etc. We really didn´t had boredom, actually it was the opposite way, we wanted to do some activities and didn´t had enough time to do it.
Culinary the cruise offered almost everything what you desire, there was a big buffet area with international food, Asia restaurant, Italian restaurant, French restaurant, Burger & Co., etc. We couldn´t test all the restaurants, we simply didn´t had enough time. The quality of the food was really good, especially inside the serving restaurants. Unfortunately there is also the downside of the so called “all you can eat” concept. There were plenty of people who took too much on their plate and left half of the food on the plate, a really abnormal affluent society.
The first port where the cruise stopped was in Coxen Hole on the island Roatan which belongs to Honduras. When we arrived we took a taxi to get to West Bay Beach. There we had a nice beach day and went for snorkelling. The corals here are in a good condition and look nice.
The second port was a small island called Harvest Caye which belongs to Belize, the resort belongs to the cruise company NCL. We spend there a couple of hours at the beach and I went snorkelling, but unfortunately not much to see.
The third port was in Mexico, it was in Costa Maya at the mainland. Here we took a taxi and drove for 45 minutes to visit the Maya ruins in Chacchoben. After that we went to the promenade in Costa Maya, there we had a nice walk and went to a Mexican restaurant. The promenade and the white beach are really nice.
The fourth port and therefore the last stop was at the island Cozumel which also belongs to Mexico. We walked around the city of San Miguel de Cozumel and had also some delicious Mexican food. After our lunch we took a taxi and went to Paradise Beach and spent a couple of hours there. I also went to snorkel and saw some nice fishes like a barracuda, a boxfish, a stingray and other kinds.
When we had our stopover, the cruise usually land in the morning between 8 and 9 am and left the place at around 5 pm to head for the next port. On our last day (day 8) the cruise arrived in Miami at 7 am, we went off board at around 8:30 am and went to a shopping mall to spend our day there. In the afternoon we took a taxi to get to the airport and flew to San Diego at the west side of the States.
Our overall experience on board of the Getaway cruise was not too bad, culinary we were well supplied, we could also made some excursions on land and also some nice beach visits, there were plenty of entertainment program on board and our room was nice as well. We also met some crew members from Indonesia and had some nice talking. The public on board was mixed, there were families with their kids, young people or couples and retired people. It was definitely an interesting experience for us, maybe we will have the opportunity in future to make another cruise trip.
Well, you will see some of our impressions when you see the pictures. Our next travel blog will be from the other side of the States, we will as usual keep you updated.
